Trump: Kings, presidents, prime ministers – all want to be members of the Peace Council

Trump told reporters during an economic event in the Roosevelt Room of the White House that a number of leaders have expressed interest in serving on the council. Its establishment is part of the US plan for the Gaza Strip, which brought about a fragile truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant movement Hamas.

“Kings, presidents, prime ministers – they all want to be members of the Peace Council,” Trump said, announcing that their names would be announced in the new year.

A United Nations Security Council resolution of 17 November allowed the Peace Council and countries cooperating with it to establish a temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza. The resolution describes the Peace Council as a transitional administration “which will establish the framework and coordinate the financing of the reconstruction of Gaza” in accordance with the peace plan.

An American general should be the commander of the ISF in Gaza

It states that the Peace Council will operate “until the Palestinian Authority satisfactorily completes its reform program… and is able to safely and effectively take control of Gaza,” Reuters reports.

The US government is reportedly planning to appoint an American general as the commander of the ISF in Gaza, Axios reported Thursday, citing two US and two Israeli officials. Reuters could not immediately confirm the news.
