Nepal signs historic deal with Gen Z after deadly September protests

Nepal signed an agreement with representatives of Generation Z, three months after the September riots that left more than 70 dead and the fall of the Government. Celebrated between Prime Minister Sushila Karki and the leaders of the protesters, it foresees measures against corruption, electoral and constitutional reforms, as well as greater participation of young people in governance.

Nepal signed an agreement this Wednesday with representatives of the so-called generation Z, three months after the deadly riots in September, which caused the fall of the Government.

The audience applauded when the Prime Minister, Sushila Karkiand the representative of people killed or injured in the demonstrations, Bhoj Bikram Thapasigned the agreement.

“It’s a crucial step,” said the head of government. “We are all on the same side. What we all want is for young people to take up leadership roles and for the country to be governed according to their aspirations and ideas”, he added.

The agreement defines the measures to be taken to fight corruption and strengthen governance and provides for electoral and constitutional reforms.

“It’s a very emotional moment and a historic victory for generation Z,” one of those present at the ceremony, Yujan Rajbhandari, 23, told AFP.

At least, 19 people were killed during the repression of the first day of demonstrations in September. The following day, protests spread across the country and protesters even set fire to parliament and government buildings, which led to the fall of the Executive.

At least, 76 people were killed during the two days of riots.

The expression ‘Generation Z’, which designates young people born in late 1990s and late 2000sis being used by protest movements of young people frustrated with inequalities, which have multiplied protests and have shaken governments in recent months, particularly on continents where youth have a strong demographic weight (Africa, Asia, Latin America).
