The Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rosen Zhelyazkov, announced this Thursday the resignation en bloc of his Government after days of protests in the capital and in other cities where thousands of citizens have been demanding his resignation, as well as the calling of new elections, after accusations of corruption.
“We have heard the voice of society”, said the prime minister, whose government won power in January after seven elections in just four years. Citizen unrest and protests began at the end of November, when the government tried to fast-track the 2026 budget, the first in its history to be written in euros.
