While NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reiterates that Europeans must be prepared for war, Russia maintains its toughest positions regarding the war in Ukraine, which is tending to become entrenched. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has already stated, and hence Rutte’s response, that while Russia has no intention of declaring war on Europe, the Kremlin will respond to “any hostile measures”, such as the deployment of European military contingents in Ukraine and the seizure of frozen Russian assets. The idea is that Russia has already threatened that it will attack any European military contingent deployed in Ukraine, which Zelensky considers guarantees for a truce agreement. For this reason, the Kremlin preemptively rejected the legitimacy of any future Ukrainian government that it does not directly control, even though Zelensky is willing to hold elections even before the formal end of the war.
