Iran executed a woman convicted of killing her four-year-old stepdaughter on Saturday. The child, identified as Ava, died in December 2023 for brain injuries and injuries caused by her stepmotherthe court news portal Mizan Online reported at the time. TASR writes about it according to AFP.
After the trial, she was a woman in March 2024 she was sentenced to kisas – the Islamic punishment of retributionwhich allows the victim’s family to demand the death of the perpetrator. The judgment was later confirmed by the Court of Appeal.
The President of the Supreme Court of West Azerbaijan Province, Naser Atabati, where the crime took place, said that the execution was carried out at dawn on Saturday. He added that Ava’s mother “strongly demanded” retribution. The authorities have not released the name of the executed woman.
Iran’s judicial system retains the death penalty for the most serious crimes, including murder and rape, usually carrying out executions by hanging at dawn. According to human rights organizations including Amnesty International, it is Iran is the country with the second highest number of executions after China.
