The vice-president of the Republic and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), criticized the so-called Dosimetry PL, recently approved by the Chamber of Deputies, and stated that the proposal could reinforce the perception of milder treatment of powerful people.
The statement was made during a dinner by the Prerogatives group, held in São Paulo, on Friday night (12).
Asked about voting on the project, Alckmin stated that changes to criminal legislation should not be made based on specific or short-term circumstances. According to him, laws need to have a structural character and stability.
“I think we should never make legislative changes based on momentary issues. Legislation must have stability, it must be more structural, it cannot be motivated by local issues”, he stated.
The vice-president also said that the approved text generates negative noise among public opinion by suggesting different weights in the application of Justice, depending on the profile of the convicted person.
“It reinforces a feeling in public opinion: when it’s a simpler person, it’s harsh, harsh. But for white-collar crime, for the most powerful, the punishment is mild. It’s not a good example,” he added.
The Dosimetry PL reduces criteria for calculating the penalties applied to those convicted of the undemocratic acts of January 8, 2023 and may be sentenced by the STF to 27 years and three months in prison for participating in the coup plot.
The text was and is now being analyzed by the Federal Senate.
