Alckmin says the end of Magnitsky against Moraes was “an act of justice”

The Vice President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), stated this Friday (12) that the government’s decision USA to remove the name of the minister of STF (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes from the sanctions list of Lei Magnitsky it was an “act of justice”.

“A very important and fair decision, because no one can be punished for exercising their duty, which is the duty of the Supreme Court minister. So, I think this measure by the American government was important. It is an act of justice, a recognition of the work of the Brazilian Supreme Court”, said Alckmin during a dinner with the Prerogativas group, in São Paulo

Alckmin confirmed that and said that the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was emphatic with the North American authorities about the need to review the application of the law against Moraes.

“I was on the side and saw it. [Lula] insisted on two things: the tariff issue, showing that Brazil and the USA have a surplus in the trade balance, and the suspension of the application of the Magnitsky Law”, he stated.

After the American decision, Alckmin assessed that an “avenue of dialogue and negotiation” was opening between the two countries.

“We have to do a win-win with the USA. It is an important commercial partner of Brazil, the largest investor in the country, and there are also many Brazilian companies present in the United States”, he declared.

Asked at the event about the advancement of the , which can (PL), Alckmin stated that legislative changes should not be made based on specific circumstances.

According to him, decisions like this reinforce the perception that criminal legislation is harsh on simple people and more lenient on white-collar crimes.

“Legislation must have stability, be structural, not motivated by momentary issues. On the other hand, it reinforces a feeling in public opinion: when it’s a simple person, it’s tough; when it’s a white-collar crime, it’s softer. It’s not a good example”, he concluded.
