Brazil should wait for contact from the US for a meeting, says Rubens Barbosa

In an interview with CNN 360°Rubens Barbosa, former Brazilian ambassador in Washington, stated that Brazil should wait for contact from the United States to schedule a meeting on foreign trade, instead of taking the initiative to offer gestures or concessions at this time.

Barbosa highlighted that all recent decisions came from the American side. “I think Brazil doesn’t have to make any gesture. For the United States, it has to wait. Because as we said here, all the decisions so far have been American decisions,” he explained.

Among the American initiatives cited by the former ambassador are a meeting with Trump, a meeting with Mauro Vieira and, more recently, the withdrawal of Alexandre de Moraes and his wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, from .

Complex bilateral agenda

Rubens Barbosa highlighted that there are several pending issues in the bilateral relationship that need to be clarified by the Americans. “We have to see, also, because there was a, you remember, in September, and there was a negotiation and Brazil presented its responses to these investigations”, he stated.

The former ambassador mentioned that it is not just tariffs that are at stake in negotiations between the two countries. “There is also this investigation by , there is the issue of big techs, which, in my view, is very difficult to advance. So, there is a very big agenda, but we don’t know what the American demands are. They have to put it on the table”, he concluded.
