Few remember this holiday ritual. Thanks to it, luck will not desert you

This is a magical time for many. Preparations for the upcoming holidays take a lot of time, but they bring a lot of joy. However, few remember that these days are filled with many superstitionssome of them come from centuries ago, when, among others, winter solstice.

Some Christmas traditions were taken from the Slavic holidays that were celebrated at that time. Of course, they were changed and adapted to the new faith, but the roots of some rituals date back to pre-Christian times. This is the case, among others, with mistletoe, which is currently one of the most popular symbols of Christmas. This plant is even used in films and TV series, the most famous ritual is a kiss with a loved one under this branch.

Traditionally, mistletoe is hung from the ceiling – a ritual that comes from Celtic beliefs. They were the ones who hung this plant on December 21 (during the winter solstice). It was mainly supposed to have protective properties, and at that time it was believed that the line between the world of the living and the dead was the thinnest. Additionally, records say that the Celts saw mistletoe as a symbol of fertility. The Slavs also believed in the “magical” properties of this plant and hung a twig from the ceiling to protect themselves from ghosts.

Only part of this tradition has survived to this day: many homes still like to hang mistletoe in the hall, but it has remained only a symbol of love. Under it, you usually kiss your loved one, but it can also be a kiss on the cheek with a family member or friend. Interestingly, it is not worth avoiding this little ritual, as it may bring bad luck.

During the holidays, it should be placed near the ceiling – most often in the hall, but there is nothing stopping you from hanging it in another room. The question is what to do with it after Christmas? Many people do not know this, but mistletoe should not be thrown away as it may cause bad luck. The best option is to dry it, e.g. on a radiator, and save it until the next holidays. Only when you bring a fresh branch home can you throw away the old one.
