The Gaza Strip is facing another existential crisis after the end of the two-year war. Torrential rains and widespread flooding have claimed at least 11 lives and destroyed or damaged more than 53,000 tents that served as temporary homes for displaced residents, according to local authorities.

Authorities under the Palestinian militant group Hamas warned on Saturday of a “comprehensive humanitarian disaster” in the Gaza Strip following widespread flooding that has so far claimed at least 11 lives. TASR refers to the report of the DPA agency.

In total, the extreme weather affected approximately 250,000 of the 1.5 million people who live in tents or temporary shelters in the Gaza Strip due to the war between Israel and Hamas, the authorities there added.

More than two million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip. Israel controls more than half of the enclave under a ceasefire that has been in effect since Oct. 10 and ended the more than two-year conflict.
