By an irony of fate, the generals and, after conviction in, are detained in Brasília in rooms of the Planalto Military Command (CMP) next to a gym in the complex where minister Alexandre de Moraes trained until mid-2022.
Rapporteur in the STF of the case for an attempted coup d’état against Bolsonaro and other military personnel, Moraes always maintained a good relationship with the Army leadership, to the point of being invited to use the CMP facilities to carry out his physical activities.
As reported in December 2023, Moraes arrived daily at 6:40 am at the complex, which also has an athletics track, and exercised alongside military personnel. The rooms where Heleno and Paulo Sérgio are held are a short walk from the gym.
The CMP is located in the Urban Military Sector of Brasília, close to the Army headquarters and where the camp that served as a base for the .
In August 2022, in the midst of the crisis between Bolsonaro and the Judiciary, when the then president and allied generals were campaigning against the Brazilian electoral system, Moraes received a message that he would have to stop going to the gym, as the space was undergoing renovation.
Suspicious, the magistrate asked his assistant – a captain of the Military Police, intermediary of the warning about the “reform” – to get the story straight.
“I said, retirement in August? Retirement is usually in January, now they have all the physical tests… And obviously it wasn’t undergoing renovation, I was the one being retired from the gym, it was a polite way of me being asked to leave the gym. It’s a shame, a good gym, but it’s water under the bridge already”, Moraes told Sheet.
As part of a movement to relax relations between the Judiciary and the barracks (the majority of members are critical of the actions of Moraes and the STF), the current commander of the Army, General Tomás Ribeiro Paiva, .
The minister thanked him, but refused.
“I didn’t return because after that I already replaced, I set up my training, and obviously now, if I return, there will be paparazzi there taking photos of me training, I will lose my peace of mind, and what’s more, I will disrupt the training of others”, stated Moraes in December 2023.
