Heavy rain in the early hours of Saturday causes disruption in Rio

A storm caused disruption in several neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro in the early hours of this Saturday (13). According to the Operations and Resilience Center of Rio City Hall (COR-Rio), the blows were accompanied by lightning and gusts of wind, resulting in events such as falling trees, branches and damage to urban infrastructure.

According to the Rio Alert System, the highest rainfall accumulated between midnight and 6 am was recorded in Jacarepaguá/Tanque, with 11.8 mm, followed by Anchieta (10.6 mm), Irajá (9.8 mm), Piedade (9.0 mm) and Madureira (6.8 mm).

Among the incidents already completed are tree falls on Rua Cabiúna, in Senador Vasconcelos, and on Rua Professor Eurico Rabelo, near Gate 11 of Maracanã. There was also a record of falling branches on Rua Professor Luiz Catanhede, in the Laranjeiras neighborhood.

Until the last update, on Saturday morning, City Hall teams were still working at points where trees had fallen onto the electrical wiring, on Rua Cardoso Júnior, near Rua das Laranjeiras, and on Rua Professor Alberto Meier, on Ilha do Governador. In Flamengo, a traffic light pole fell on Rua Senador Vergueiro, close to Rua Tucumã.

Alerta Rio maintains a high severity weather warning valid from 3am this Saturday until 3am on Sunday (14). The forecast indicates the continuation of moderate to heavy rain showers, accompanied by lightning and gusts of wind, mainly between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The authorities recommend that the population avoid flooded areas, do not take shelter under trees and pay extra attention to traffic. COR-Rio advises residents to follow official updates and call emergency services if necessary.
