President Luiz Inácio da Silva () demanded this Friday (12) that digital platforms be held responsible for the “systematic” publication of hate speech and encouragement against women.
According to the PT member, “freedom of expression cannot be confused with complicity in the commission of heinous crimes.” He made the statement during the 13th Conference of , held in Brasília.
“It is unacceptable that digital platforms continue to pretend that they are not responsible for the criminal content published on their networks. It is unacceptable that publications encouraging rape, assaults and other forms of violence against women continue to circulate with impunity without any type of moderation”, he stated.
Lula said he will hold a meeting next week to discuss combating this type of violence with representatives of the (Federal Supreme Court), the (Superior Court of Justice), and the .
“Violence cannot be the task of the government alone. It requires commitment from the federal government, Congress, the Judiciary, state and municipal governments,” he declared.
Last week, the president had already said that he would call one to address violence against women. The speeches occur at a time of wide repercussion of feminicides in Brazil, such as the case of , 31, via São Paulo by .
At this Friday’s event, Lula also stated that “protecting the life, physical integrity and dignity of girls and women is not censorship” but, rather, “a responsibility from which the networks cannot continue to exempt themselves”.
The defense of social media regulation gained traction during Lula’s third term. The government sent Congress a bill that gives power to the (Administrative Council for Economic Defense) to guarantee competition.
Initially, Lula’s administration would also present a proposal that would involve obligations for platforms to regulate content, but backed away from the decision, as in September.
Human rights
During the event, Lula signed the message that sends to Congress the proposal that creates the National Plan for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and another that seeks to ratify the Inter-American Convention Against All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance.
The Human Rights Conference was held again after almost 10 years — the last edition was in 2016. The objective of the meeting is to debate and formulate actions to create the SNDH (National Human Rights System).
First Lady Janja Lula da Silva and the ministers (Human Rights) and (Foreign Affairs) were present at the event.
The 2025 conference’s theme is “For a National Human Rights System: consolidating democracy, resisting setbacks and advancing in guaranteeing rights for all people”. It started on Wednesday (10) and ends this Friday.
