Lula thanks Trump for lifting sanctions on Moraes – 12/12/2025 – Power

The president (PT) thanked the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) in a direct message shortly after the announcement.

The American government removed the minister from the list of individuals sanctioned under , legislation applied to people who have committed serious violations of human rights, including dictators.

The decision to use it for a Brazilian authority had been unprecedented. The US applied the same sanction to members of Venezuela’s highest courts.

The information was revealed by Lauro Jardim’s column in the newspaper O Globo, and confirmed by Sheet.

According to assistants at Palácio do Planalto, in the phone call made between the two presidents last week, Lula had spoken to Trump about the importance of removing the sanction from the ministers. Until then, there was no confirmation that the American would withdraw the measure this Friday (12).

Lula met with Moraes during Friday night in São Paulo. The president’s official account published a photo in which the two appear hugging former football player Ronado Fenômeno.

Moraes had been punished by the Trump administration on July 30. At the time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that there were “serious human rights abuses” by the STF minister.

The American government also removed Moraes’ wife, Viviane Barci, and the company, which belongs to the magistrate’s family, from the sanctioned list.

Through Magnitsky, the Trump administration orders the freezing of any property or assets that the sanctioned individual has in the US and can also prohibit American financial entities from carrying out transactions in dollars with a sanctioned person. This includes Mastercard and Visa credit card brands, for example.
