The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, criticized this Friday (12) the approval, by the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina, of the bill that abolishes racial quotas in state universities.

“They want to see us out of universities, but quotas open doors and there is no way back for us,” he stated.

On her profile on the social network Instagram, Anielle stated that the state deputies of Santa Catarina “want to ignore the Federal Constitution”. And he recalls that “the numbers prove that the quota policy works and helps to repair historical injustices”.

In the same publication, the minister informed that the ministry is studying the appropriate measures to “prevent this absurd setback”.

The bill went to Governor Jorginho Mello (PL) for approval.

The project puts an end to the policy of adopting quotas and other affirmative actions in state higher education institutions. The approved project also prohibits reservation of places or any other similar mechanism not only for students, but also for employees, including teachers.

In a judgment in 2012, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) ruled on the constitutionality of the quota policy for black and indigenous people in universities.

“The rule aims to overcome historical social distortions, based on the right to material equality and the principle of proportionality”, says the result of the judgment.
