The former first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, and the president’s children have a strained relationship with conservative and Centrão leaders; high popularity with voters continues to be an asset
The Magnitsky Law against minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), increased tension between right-wing and Centrão leaders with the family of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), arrested for an attempted coup d’état.
And the undertaking by federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who went into self-exile in the United States and worked for the country to apply sanctions against Brazil, was never well received by the main leaders of opposition parties. The tariffs imposed on Brazil were considered a “tragedy” and, in the opinion of politicians heard by the Young Panhelped the popularity of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who adopted a speech defending national interests.
The irritation only increased when the PT member, helped by industrial and agribusiness entrepreneurs, achieved a hitherto unthinkable rapprochement with the Republican. By dropping a large part of the tariff, the government gained morale with Faria Lima and large producers, as well as more popularity in the polls. Trump’s public praise for the Brazilian president only increased right-wing leaders’ disgust with Eduardo.
Now, with the fall of Magnitisky against Moraes, the patience of opposition politicians with the Bolsonaro family has reached a critical point: the weakening of the Judiciary is an agenda dear not only to the Bolsonaro right, but also to moderates and the Centrão. Leaders interviewed by the report classified Eduardo’s mission as a “huge failure” and said that the result was very positive for Lula, who will arrive in the 2026 elections as a favorite for re-election.
Despite being the most criticized, Eduardo is not the only Bolsonaro that displeases: former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro is considered “difficult” and inexperienced in politics. Two weeks ago, he burned bridges with Centrão by sinking the PL’s support for Ciro Gomes (PSDB) in Ceará. She, who is expected to run for the Senate in the Federal District, is considered an important electoral leader by the right. In addition to the Bolsonarists, the assessment is that Michelle has the potential to win even more votes from evangelicals, especially women.
Experienced and well circulated in the National Congress, having established extensive dialogue with the center and even with left-wing parliamentarians, Flávio Bolsonaro also did not escape criticism. The announcement of two pre-candidacies took many party leaders by surprise and displeased Centrão chiefs, who prefer a union for the candidacy of the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).
About 24 hours after the announcement, the senator said he could review the candidacy and that it had “a price”, citing an amnesty for his father. Again, the movement was criticized internally, considered hasty and poorly conducted.
Despite this, Bolsonaro’s firstborn son managed to do it, being congratulated even by Tarcísio. Right-wing leaders supported the pre-candidacy, despite admitting that the field will not necessarily unite around a single representative. With unity, especially in Congress, the right managed to approve the Dosimetry PL in the Chamber. In the Senate, there are even expectations among Bolsonarists that an amendment will transform the text into the dreamed of “broad, general and unrestricted amnesty” for the former president and others convicted of the so-called coup plot and the 8th of January.
For politicians interviewed by the report, the conservative camp lost so that Bolsonaro would be closer to freedom. The protagonism of the captain’s family is increasingly questioned, but the family’s undeniable popularity continues to be an asset. A deputy, on condition of anonymity, said that the right is hostage to the former president’s political heirs,

US President Donald Trump on the possibility of repealing the law on December 2nd.
In the phone call, which lasted around 40 minutes, the main topic discussed was the mutual fight against Brazilian criminal organizations operating in the United States. However, according to sources, Lula commented on the 40% US tariffs that are still in force against Brazilian manufactured goods and, in this wake of negotiations, he also mentioned the importance of revoking this sanction against the STF minister.
“Alexandre de Moraes celebrates his birthday tomorrow, I gave him the recognition that it was not fair for a president of another country to punish a minister of the Supreme Court, because he was complying with the Constitution”, he said during channel launch event SBT News.
