Residents of a condominium and other properties in the Campos Elíseos neighborhood, in the center of , sent a petition to the City of São Paulo against the current installation project in the Container region, on land provided by the municipal management.
which currently operates in the Luz region, where the city hall intends to build social housing.
The fact that the place does not have walls generated complaints from residents, who cite fear that it will be occupied by crack users, as has happened in the past in a nearby region.
They cite the “trauma still very present in the memory of the condominium owners” of the Racy Building, located near Helvetia Street, where Cracolândia was installed for 11 months in 2022.
“It is feared that the aforementioned open public square will attract addicts, especially at night”, says the petition, which has more than a thousand signatures.
This Thursday (11), a committee of residents met with the city hall’s executive secretary for Strategic Projects, Edsom Ortega, to present the complaint. They complained of not having been consulted about the project and stated that security measures for the site were being neglected in planning.
The secretary stated that the idea is that only 1,000 m² of the area will be used by the theater, and the rest will house an education unit. He also gave guarantees about security on site.
Another argument from residents against moving Container to the location is the fact that the region is already well served by theaters, and that the equipment should be going to the outskirts.
“It is a matter of social justice, based on the principles of equity and equality, to install cultural facilities in neighborhoods where such options are scarce, without concentrating so many units in just a few neighborhoods in the central region of São Paulo”, they state, in the petition delivered to the management ().
The relocation of the theater has been the subject of controversy since the relocation plan was announced by the mayor. Several artists, such as , , , Antonio Fagundes and took a stand against the eviction.
