Steve Witkoff heads to Volodymyr Zelensky: They will discuss the peace plan in Berlin over the weekend

The special envoy of US President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, is preparing for a meeting in Berlin, where he will look for a way to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders in Berlin this weekend. According to the AFP agency, the White House stated this on Friday, writes TASR.

  • Steve Witkoff will meet with Zelensky and European leaders.
  • The meeting will take place in Berlin.
  • The topic of discussion will be a peace plan to end the war.
  • Ukraine updated the 28-point peace plan.

Meeting in Berlin

This is happening at a time when Washington is pushing for a plan to end the bitter war between Russia and Kiev.

A representative of the White House confirmed the veracity of the Wall Street Journal’s report about Witkoff’s weekend meeting with Zelensky and European leaders, during which they will discuss the state of peace negotiations.

According to a statement from the German government on Friday, a meeting of leaders, including EU and NATO representatives, will be held in Berlin on Monday within hours of Zelensky and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz participating in a German-Ukrainian business forum.

Peace plan

Ukrainian officials said they recently sent Washington an updated plan that builds on the original 28-point peace proposal to end the war that began in 2022 with Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Trump’s plan, unveiled last month, has been criticized as copying Moscow’s key demands, with Ukraine ceding strategically important territory to Russia.

The latest version of the plan includes the idea of quick accession of Ukraine to the EU, which Moscow does not agree with. Ukraine should become an EU member by January 2027, a senior official familiar with the latest proposal told AFP. French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said on Friday that the Europeans and Kiev were asking the United States to provide “security guarantees” ahead of any negotiations on the territory.
