The EU is turning its back on the combustion engine, what happens now and what does that mean for the climate goals?

The haggling over the future EU strategy when it comes to drive technology is in its final stages. On December 10th, the EU Commission wanted to announce whether the strict ban on combustion engines would remain in 2035 or not. Now the result of the lengthy negotiations will be announced on December 16th. The head of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, has already rushed forward with his view: The EU Commission wants to announce the phase-out of internal combustion engines planned for 2035, he told the German newspaper Bild. The planned 100 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions for automobile manufacturers’ fleet targets from 2035 should be converted into the goal of a 90 percent reduction, the newspaper quotes Weber. According to his statements, there will be no strict ban on combustion engines later on either. The EU Commission does not confirm this.
