At least two people died and eight were seriously injured in a shooting that occurred this Saturday, on the campus of Brown University, in the USA.
O shooting took place in the University’s engineering building, on the second day of the final exams, and made at least two dead.
There are still eight people injured in critical condition, said the mayor of Providence, Brett Smiley.
The Ivy League university issued an active shooter alert and asked students and staff to shelter in place while a manhunt involving more than 400 police officers to find the shooter.
University officials began by informing students and staff that there was a suspect who was already in custody, but they later corrected the information, revealing that police were still looking for one or more suspects, according to alerts issued by Brown’s emergency notification system cited by the Associated Press (AP).
“We are still receiving information about what is happening, but we are just tell people to lock their doors and remain vigilant“, said Providence Councilman John Goncalves, whose district includes the Brown campus.
“As a Brown alumnus, someone who loves the Brown community and represents this area, I’m heartbroken. My sincere condolences to all family members and people affected”, he added.
The shooting occurred on the second day of national exams near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story complex housing the School of Engineering and the Physics department.
According to the private university’s website, the building has more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices.
Students were asked to remain where they were while police continue to investigate, while people outside the perimeter are being advised to avoid the area.
Brown is a private institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and more than three thousand graduate students.
