Belgian woman's cell phone found two years after her disappearance in Australia

Céline Cremer’s car was found by the police a few days later, but the woman never showed up

The cell phone of a Belgian woman who disappeared two years ago on the island of Tasmania, Australia, was found this Saturday during a search organized by her friends and family.

Céline Cremer, who was 31 years old at the time of her disappearance, was last seen in an area near Philosopher Falls, where this private search took place, in June 2023.

Cremer’s car was found by police a few days later nearby, but several searches over the following months failed to detect any trace of the missing woman.

However, Tasmanian police said in a statement that they would join the search organized by Cremer’s family and friends.

“The cell phone data, as well as the location where it was found, supports our theory that Celine may have chosen, using an app on her cell phone, to leave the Philosopher Falls trail to take a more direct route back to her car as daylight faded,” said Inspector Andrew Hanson of local authorities. ““We suspect that she dropped her cell phone and continued without it, becoming disoriented in dense terrain,” he added.

Céline Cremer disappeared on June 17, 2023, with her friends reporting her missing nine days later. Authorities said winter weather conditions in the days after her disappearance were “not compatible with survival” during the period she is believed to have been exposed to them.
