‘Bolsonaro could die from one day to the next’, says Mourão – 12/14/2025 – Panel

When defending house arrest for the former president, the general, senator for the Republicans-RS and former vice president, stated that the health situation of his running mate in 2018 is serious enough to justify the concession by the Federal Supreme Court.

“General Heleno has been experiencing health problems for some time, like any person who has reached the age of 78 subjected to the normal tensions of military life and then those faced at other times. Obviously this causes consequences, and Alexandre de Moraes was shown that his house arrest would be necessary, as well as Bolsonaro’s. It’s another thing that, whatever… Bolsonaro is that guy who walks on a knife’s edge, he could die from one day to the next,” Mourão told the Panel.

The fragility of Bolsonaro’s health has been mentioned by his allies for some time, and more recently in a request for authorization for him to undergo surgery and to reiterate the request for the granting of house arrest.

Mourão is part of the same political camp as Bolsonaro, but he has long distanced himself from the captain, by whom he was overlooked during his administration. Even before the halfway point of his term, the president made his decision clear. In an interview in 2021, he explained the rupture. “Mourão does his job, he’s very independent. Sometimes he gets in our way a little, but the deputy is like a brother-in-law, right. You get married and have to put up with the brother-in-law on your side, you can’t send the brother-in-law away.”

Mourão admitted that he fought a cold war with Bolsonaro during his term and complained, in 2022, that he had never been approached to wash his dirty laundry. “Obviously I would have had a more detailed conversation with him about my role, to avoid the clashes that occurred and that need not have occurred.”

In one, Mourão said that, if he had not been passed over for the government ticket in the 2022 election, Bolsonaro would have been re-elected.
