Could Republicans lose the House? Trump reveals concern, shows WSJ

Dec 14 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about whether Republicans will maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in next year’s midterm elections because some of his economic policies have not yet taken full effect, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

‘I can’t say. I don’t know when all this money will start to be released’, said Trump when asked about the possibility of Republicans losing the House in November. The White House did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The president has argued that his economic policies, including imposing across-the-board tariffs on imports, are creating jobs, boosting the stock market and attracting more investment to the United States.

After campaigning last year on promises to curb inflation, Trump has alternated in recent weeks between calling cost-of-living problems a hoax, blaming them on former President Joe Biden and promising that his economic policies will benefit Americans next year.

“I think when we have to talk about the election in a few months, our prices will be in good shape,” Trump said in the interview, which was given to the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Last month, the president repealed tariffs on more than 200 food products in response to growing concern among American consumers about the high cost of food. Trump did not say whether he would reduce tariffs on other products, according to the newspaper.

Trump’s overall approval rating rose to 41% in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, but approval of his performance on the cost of living was just 31%.

Democrats won a string of victories in state and local elections in Virginia, New Jersey and New York City, where voters’ growing concerns about the cost of living, including high food prices, were a central issue.

Officials said Trump will begin a series of trips in the new year to campaign for Republican candidates and highlight his economic policy successes. Trump has declared that his tax cuts and tariffs on foreign goods will put more money in the pockets of American families.
