The exiled leadership of the Palestinian movement Hamas officially confirmed the death of one of its key men on Sunday. The head of arms production and alleged co-architect of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Ra’id Saad, was killed in a targeted attack on his vehicle in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

“The Palestinian people are currently going through difficult times and are suffering greatly… the martyrdom of more than 70,000 people, the last of whom was Mujahideen commander Ra’id Saad and his companions,” he said in a speech on Hamas Al-Aqsa television.

Israel announced on Saturday that it had killed Raïd Saad in an attack on his car. He described him as “one of the architects” of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war.
According to the Hamas movement, the fighting has so far claimed the lives of more than 71,000 Palestinians. This figure does not distinguish between militants and civilians, the UN considers it reliable.
A source from within the Israeli Defense Ministry described Saad as the head of the unit responsible for weapons production. According to another Reuters source, he was the second-highest-ranking commander in the armed wing of Hamas.
