A 47-year-old man died post-operatively, after a simple nose operation. Family wants answers, but autopsy results could take up to six months.
Pedro Semedo He suffered from sinusitis and occasionally had a nose bleed. He traveled from Odivelas to Vila do Conde to undergo a simple operation at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia hospital, after two years of waiting for a voucher.
The surgery on November 28th went well. The 47-year-old user woke up, but shortly afterwards, without anyone knowing why, he went into cardiorespiratory arrest and he died.
“It was a simple surgery. It went well, the patient woke up and, shortly after, he had a cardiorespiratory arrest which, despite immediate assistance, it was not possible to reverse. We don’t know the reason. Nothing could predict what happened. In 25 years and thousands of surgeries, this has never happened. The medical team has a clear conscience, but devastated”, reported the Santa Casa provider, Rui Maiato the .
Since entering the operating room, the family reports that they have heard little or nothing about Pedro. “We don’t know anything. We couldn’t see the body, they don’t give us the medical reports. We just want answers“, said an uncle to JN.
As the morning newspaper reports, the family despairs, without a report that explains what happened and without ever being able to see the body. From the Institute of Legal Medicine, they tell you that the Autopsy results “may take six months”.
“We have all the reports. We said what documents they would have to submit to collect them, in accordance with the data protection law [só podem ser entregues à viúva e/ou herdeiros]. They never responded. We sent a second email and nothing”, defended Santa Casa.
However, the family accuses Santa Casa of hiding information, demands an investigation and, according to Jornal de Notícias, will file a complaint with the Public Ministry and the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS).
Pedro Semedo was married and father of two children, one of which was a two-year-old girl.
