“It looked like fireworks”: Australian bather reports chaos after attack

At least 12 people were killed in a shooting on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, which targeted the Jewish community, according to police. One of the shooters also died and the other is in critical condition.

Belinda Clemens was sitting on rocks near Bondi’s north end when she heard gunshots.

“It looked like fireworks, and then they were running in both directions,” Clemens told CNN.

She then saw what appeared to be gunshots hitting the water and “splashes rising into the air.”

Videos recorded by Clemens show groups of swimmers floating in the water and clinging to surfboards.

Clemens said he lent his phone to several desperate children who needed to tell their parents they were okay.

After the beach quickly emptied, Clemens said there were still remnants of the early evening, when families and friends gathered on the beach to enjoy the summer evening – shoes, beer cans and birthday cakes left behind in a hurry.

“It’s a family area. It’s really disturbing.”
