Residents of the Quintinha courtyard in Lisbon fear losing homes after auction and have already submitted a petition

The Quintinha courtyard, in Beato, in Lisbon, was auctioned, but the offers were below the minimum value of almost two million euros. If the court rules that it can be sold for that amount, more than 100 residents are at risk of being left without a home.

A divided house, with no connecting walls between the spaces, has been Angélica’s for decades. At 68 years old, he continues to make small improvements to stay there.

Angélica has lived as best she can, in the Quintinha courtyard, in the Beato area, in Lisbon, since 1977, with her family. The only place where he found a roof he could support.

A few months ago, Angélica and 130 other residents were surprised by the advertisement posted at the entrance. The yard belonged to the company AC Rodrigues, Construções e Investimentos SA, which went into insolvency, leading to it being auctioned with a base value of 2.3 million euros and a minimum price of 2 million.

The business, closed on November 14th, still does not have a new owner, and fears are growing.

Graça Cardoso, born and raised in the courtyard, knows that the house is not in good condition. He has worked for the same company for 14 years, but the salary is no longer enough.

They have already submitted a petition to the Lisbon City Council to exercise their right of preference.

This is an old working-class neighborhood, belonging to the manor house of the Marqueses de Marialva, the courtyard has a total area of 3,387 square meters. There are no known rental contracts, and few pay rent.

SIC provided clarifications to Lisbon City Council, which did not respond until this report was issued. To the assumed that the consideration of the exercise of the right of preference must be based on technical analysis, which will involve a heritage, rehabilitation and reconstruction component.

Future prospects still seem murky. Residents maintain their routine, hoping that, at least until the holidays, nothing will change.
