You probably know the name John Cena from the comedies in which the actor stars, or from the character Peacemaker, who appeared in the Suicide Squad films or the HBO series. However, before he took his chances in Hollywood, the 47-year-old actor was one of the legends of American wrestling.
“It was” because, last Saturday night (13/12), Cena retired from WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), in a landmark fight on Saturday Night’s Main Event, held at the Capital One Arena, in Washington.
In his last fight, Cena, who is considered the biggest name in the sport to have emerged in the last 20 years, was defeated by Gunther after giving up the fight, something that hadn’t happened in over two decades.
The fight lasted less than 25 minutes and was constructed as a classic farewell to one of the biggest names in wrestling. Gunther kept John Cena trapped in a rear naked choke for long moments until he forced his opponent to give up.
In an emotional way, John Cena said goodbye to the ring after signing with WWE in 2001. He debuted on TV the following year and soon became a phenomenon, with the character Doctor of Thuganomics. During his career, he won 17 world titles, participated in WrestleMania six times and established himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
His charisma and strength soon caught the attention of cinema and, since 2006, he began a career on the big screen, starring in action and comedy films.
