Death toll from Sydney beach shooting rises to 16

The shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney claimed 16 lives and injured 40. Police identified the attack as a terrorist attack against the Jewish community.

The number of victims of Sunday’s shooting on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, has risen to 16, including one of the attackers, Australian authorities have announced. Another 40 people remain in hospital, TASR reports according to Sky News.

The incident took place on Bondi Beach around 6:45 p.m. local time (8:45 a.m. CET), when two gunmen attacked people celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon reported that the attackers were a father (50) and son (24). The police managed to shoot the older shooter, while they detained the other. The authorities identified the younger of the pair as Návid Akram, who is currently in a critical but stable condition. Australian authorities are not looking for any other perpetrators.

He kept the weapons legally

The police confirmed that the 50-year-old attacker had a permit to possess six firearms. Police in New South Wales are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack aimed at the Jewish community in Sydney.

“What we saw yesterday was an act of sheer evil… An act of anti-Semitism, an act of terrorism on our shores, in an iconic Australian location, Bondi Beach,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told a press conference early Monday morning Australian time.

According to the police, the victims are between ten and 87 years old. One of them is a 10-year-old girl. Initial reports put the death toll at 12 and the injured at 29.

Several international leaders and organizations also condemned the incident.
