Hugo says he “prophesied” Corinthians’ two penalty saves

Hero of Corinthians in qualifying for the final of the Copa do Brasil, Hugo Souza said he “prophesied” the saves of the two penalties against Cruzeiro. The goalkeeper told the press what he said to his teammates before the kicks.

“I arrived at the circle, when the game ended (in normal time) and said: ‘Guys, go there and take the penalties and I’ll take two. I usually say that this isn’t arrogance, it’s a bit of self-confidence. I prophesied about my own life there”, he stated.

Timão’s goalkeeper also said whether he had studied Gabigol’s shots –, with the ball stopping at Hugo Souza.

“In my studies of penalties, I preferred not to even look at Gabriel’s (recent penalties). He’s a guy I’ve known for many years, we’ve been training together since 2019. When he arrived at Flamengo I was already there. If there’s a guy who saved his penalties in training, it was me,” said Hugo.

“That’s why I preferred not to look at the videos, I went with my feeling (‘feeling’, in free translation) and I thought it would work. I changed my strategy to defend his penalty, thank God it worked”, he added, in an interview in the mixed area of Neo Química Arena.

Hugo Souza’s defense on Gabigol’s charge was fundamental for the team. If the striker converted, Cruzeiro would have guaranteed a place in the final of the Copa do Brasil.
