Justifications by Miranda Sarmento. Concentrating collections in April does not please the Portuguese Automobile Association.
They will still go through the Assembly of the Republic, but for now the Council of Ministers have approved the changes in relation to the IUC – Single Circulation Tax.
The “car tax”, which is paid upon registration of the vehicle in question, will become , for everyone – if the maximum value of the tax is 100 euros. If it is more than 100 euros and less than 500, it is paid in two installments: April and October. IUC greater than 500 euros is paid in three installments: April, July and October.
The person who announced these changes, last Thursday, was António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency.
But in the meantime the Minister of Finance has already commented on the matter. Miranda Sarmento explained: “We pay the IUC in the month of registration. The problem is that the newer cars no longer have the month of registration”.
“What we noticed, in the Tax Authority, is that there were many people, naturally, who forgot and that paid fines,” continued the minister, in conversation with journalists.
Miranda Sarmento reinforced what Leitão Amaro had said: the IUC will not become more expensive.
Those who are not satisfied with this change in calendar are the companies that sell automobiles.
“It will represent an enormous and brutal effort, which could put the sector at risk“, commented Nuno Silva, president of the Portuguese Automobile Trade Association, on .
“Concentrating the IUC in fixed billing periods will constitute a serious cash flow problem“, added Hélder Pedro, general secretary of the Portuguese Automobile Association.
