Paulinho makes history in Mexico: Portuguese scores in the final and is champion with Toluca

Paulinho scored the second goal of Toluca’s victory, in the second leg of the Abertura championship final, decided on penalties. The Portuguese striker fhi the top scorer in the Mexican League for the third time in a row.

Toluca defeated Tigres this Monday, in a final with a penalty shootout, and became champion of the “Abertura” tournament. Striker Paulinho was once again the protagonist and won his fourth title since leaving Sporting for football in Mexico.

Paulinho scored the second goal of Toluca’s victory, in the second leg of the final, after Tigres had won 1-0 in the first game of the decision.

The Portuguese international, who did not participate in the penalties after being injured after the 90th minute, was the top scorer in the Mexican League for the third time in a row.

The former Sporting and SC Braga player had already won the ‘Clausura’ in 2024/25 – seeing Toluca return to the Mexican champion titles 15 years later – and, this season, he also won the Mexican Super Cup and the Champions Cup, contested between the winners of the Mexican and United States top tiers.
