The leader of the PL in the Chamber, deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante, stated that deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) may resign from his mandate next year, after requesting political asylum in the United States. Ramagem has been in the country since September.

According to Sóstenes, the intention is to prevent the parliamentarian’s situation from being analyzed at this time by the Chamber. The PL leader said he spoke with Ramagem this Monday (15), when he discussed the possibility of resignation, it was mentioned as a future alternative, given the priority given after the asylum process.

“I’m going to ask the group of leaders not to put Ramagem’s situation on the agenda this week. I spoke to him just now and he said that he might even think about a future resignation next year, because he is processing a request for political asylum in the United States, and at this moment maintaining his mandate is important to him”, he stated.

Internal dispute and 2026 elections

Sóstenes Cavalcante also commented on the 2026 electoral scenario. He confirmed that the name of senator Flávio Bolsonaro is already consolidated as a candidate for president and stated that there is no possibility of going back on this decision. As for the Senate, according to the deputy, the scenario for Rio de Janeiro remains open, with several names being evaluated, including him.

The PL leader said he does not have great enthusiasm for running for a seat in the Senate, but admitted that he may accept the candidacy if there is an understanding within the party and, especially, at the request of former president Jair Bolsonaro. “Both times I was with President Bolsonaro, he asked to put my name,” he stated.

Despite this, Sóstenes highlighted that his main political ambition is the Presidency of the Chamber of Deputies. According to him, a possible candidacy will depend on the performance of the right in the elections and the size of the PL bench in the next legislature.

Criticisms of the conduct of the Chamber

The PL leader also criticized the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta. Sóstenes stated that the current management adopts a stance of postponing decisions and classified the leadership style as “procrastinating”.

“Hugo’s management leads by pushing the problem forward. That doesn’t help,” he declared.

Despite the criticism, Sóstenes considered that Hugo Motta has his own style of conducting work, which must be respected, although he disagrees with the way some decisions were taken throughout the year.
