TAP issued a warning to passengers about specific restrictions applicable to certain flights, highlighting an object of common use that cannot be transported either in hand luggage or in the hold. Lighters are completely prohibited on flights to the United States, a rule that joins other limitations related to liquids, powders and reinforced security controls.
The information comes as part of a broader clarification about what can or cannot be carried on board, in a context in which many passengers continue to be surprised at security checks because they are unaware of the differences between destinations and types of luggage.
Lighter is left off flights to the USA
According to the information available on the website, on flights to and from the United States, the transport of lighters is completely prohibited, both in hand luggage and in checked luggage. The rule is absolute and does not provide for exceptions, which means that the object cannot be taken with you under any circumstances.
According to the same source, these flights are also subject to additional security procedures, including a new check of hand luggage and more detailed inspections of footwear and all electrical and electronic devices carried by the passenger.
The airline writes that, for North American destinations, there are also restrictions on the transport of powders and powdered substances in carry-on luggage. Products such as flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices, powdered milk or cosmetics cannot exceed containers with a capacity greater than 350 milliliters.
Whenever it is necessary to transport these items, the recommendation is to place them in checked luggage. This limitation does not apply to prescription powdered medicines, powdered baby formulas, or products purchased from Duty Freeas long as they are sealed in tamper-evident bags.
Smoking, tobacco and general rules
Please note that smoking is completely prohibited on board any aircraft and that, at airports, tobacco consumption is only permitted in duly marked areas. Still, cigarettes can be transported in hand luggage.
At security control, objects such as lighters or electronic cigarettes must be included in hand luggage. However, if you go to the USA, you will not be able to travel with a lighter.
The ANA Aeroportos website explains that, regardless of the destination, the transport of liquids in hand luggage is subject to strict limits. Each container cannot exceed 100 milliliters and the total per passenger cannot exceed one liter.
According to the same source, these containers must be packed in a transparent plastic bag, with easy closure and dimensions of approximately 19 by 20 centimeters, in order to facilitate security control and avoid delays in boarding.

Foods such as soups, syrups, jams, pâtés and soft cheeses are also considered liquids, all of which must comply with the same quantity and packaging rules when transported in hand luggage.
