The RAE adds logging in, microtheater, millennial or tourismphobia to the Dictionary | Culture

The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) has presented this morning the electronic version 23.8.1 of the Dictionary of the Spanish language (DLE), in an event held at its Madrid headquarters. The update has constituted a preview of the work developed by the Language Academies throughout this year and has served as a prelude to the publication of the 24th edition of the DLE.

The presentation was chaired by the director of the RAE and president of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (ASALE), Santiago Muñoz Machado, who introduced the new words accepted by the dictionary: Rawivory, logging in, microtheater, millennial, tourismphobia. New voices that obey “the small revolution of words that is produced by the emergence of technology. It has an enormous effect on language, and this is something that does not happen too much.” It is a small preview of what will happen next year: the arrival of version 24 of the Dictionary.

The head of the Institute of Lexicography, Elena Zamora, spoke at the event, detailing the technical and methodological work that has supported this version of the dictionary, as well as the criteria used for the incorporation and revision of words. “Many proposals arrive,” Zamora stated, alluding to the internal process of lexicographic analysis and validation. The new version of the DLE has incorporated revisions, adjustments and new lexical additions. “About 330 new features,” said Zamora.
