TVI journalist “disillusioned with the SNS” after days in hospital: “It’s inhumane…”

Carolina Resende de Matos used her Instagram account this Monday morning, December 15th, to share with her fans that she was admitted to Cascais Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

The TVI and CNN Portugal journalist admitted that it was all just a “scare”, reporting a little of what she saw and what she experienced during this five-day hospitalization.

“(…) 5 days later I leave Cascais Hospital disappointed with the SNS but very grateful for all the people who are still keeping it alive. The SNS saves lives but largely due to the frightening effort of professionals who do the impossible to carry this gigantic burden on their shoulders. The last 5 days have served to slow down but also to feel the reality of our country first hand”started by writing.

In the text she shared, along with a photo of her hospital bed, Carolina Resende de Matos thanked each doctor and healthcare professional who accompanied her, highlighting everyone’s efforts.

“I saw elderly people sleeping in wheelchairs, people undergoing treatment lying on waiting benches in the hospital emergency room. Endless hours of uncertainty. Stretchers scattered throughout the corridors with patients “abandoned” by their families, without us, as a society, being able to find a solution to this harsh reality (…). The tired face of those who despair for care and of those who do everything to save our lives. It’s sad. Sad to see the path the National Health Service is taking”.

The TVI journalist explained that, after peritonitis, she underwent surgery to remove the appendix, stressing that she is “fine”: “From the time I entered until I underwent surgery, 19 hours passed. Nineteen! It’s inhumane. In between a strike. I will remember the struggle of those who fought and carried out minimal services under tremendous personal effort. We are talking about people. Patients and health professionals. We all deserve respect. I write these words because I am lucky enough to still have a voice in this country. I do it for those who don’t have one (…)”he emphasized.
