Chancellor Merz sends an important message to the Kremlin: What is the Russian leadership asking for?

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the fighting in Ukraine during Christmas. This was pointed out by the DPA agency, writes TASR. “Maybe the Russian leadership still has a bit of human decency and will leave the population alone from this terror for at least a few days during Christmas,” said Merz on Monday evening at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin.

In response to Merz’s words, according to DPA, based on the official translation, the leader of Ukraine added that “no such remnants (of decency) exist, but all things are possible”. Merz described the ongoing Russian attacks on kindergartens, hospitals and energy sources as “terror against the civilian population”. He added that the truce will be during Christmas “could also be the beginning of reasonable and constructive negotiations on how to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine”.

According to DPA, the German chancellor answered cautiously when asked if he expected a truce by Christmas. “That now depends entirely on the Russian side,” stated. During the two-day negotiations in Berlin, the delegations of Kyiv and Washington worked out joint European, American and Ukrainian proposals for a peace agreement, which will now be presented to the Russian side, explained Merz.
