The defense of (PL) again asked, this Monday (15), the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) for urgent authorization for the former president to undergo surgery.
According to lawyers, he needs a surgical procedure to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia, in addition to additional interventions.
Inguinal hernia is a condition in which tissue in the abdomen swells and causes a bulge to appear in the groin area.
At the beginning of the evening, Moraes determined that the examination carried out on Sunday (14) and the reports attached to the case file be sent for analysis by medical experts next Wednesday (17) at the INC (National Institute of Criminalistics). Based on this expertise, the minister will conclude the request.
The former president is. He was convicted by the STF in the coup plot process.
Moraes authorized on Friday (12) that Bolsonaro receive a doctor to perform an ultrasound examination.
He also ordered, a day earlier, to carry out a medical examination within 15 days to assess the need for surgical intervention. At the time, the magistrate said that the former president underwent a medical-legal examination upon being arrested and that, at the time, “there was no record of any medical condition that would indicate the need for immediate surgical intervention.”
This Monday, Bolsonaro’s lawyers said that, “since the defense’s last statement, there has been an objective and proven evolution of the clinical picture, now supported by a recently carried out imaging exam and a new conclusive medical report, which requires immediate action.”
The report presented by the team states that the symptoms of pain and discomfort in the inguinal region intensified due to Bolsonaro’s frequent bouts of hiccups, a consequence of the consequences of the stab wound suffered in 2018 and subsequent surgeries.
These crises also “cause an intermittent increase in abdominal pressure, significantly increasing the risk of intestinal incarceration or strangulation — hypotheses that, if realized, would require emergency surgery, with exponentially greater risks.”
“In this scenario, we are not faced with a remote or abstract preventive hypothesis, but with a current, objective and proven medical need, the postponement of which exposes the Petitioner to a real risk of sudden worsening, emergency hospitalization and possible avoidable surgical complications”, they stated.
Lawyers Celso Vilardi, Paulo Cunha Bueno and Daniel Tesser also said that carrying out the procedure in a planned manner, in a suitable hospital environment, with post-operative monitoring and motor physiotherapy is essential.
Before the episode, the defense had already added to the process several documents and exams listing Bolsonaro’s health problems and spoke of a “risk to the life” of the former president. They asked that the politician be kept at home, where he had been under house arrest since August 4th.
According to medical reports added to the defense’s request, these surgical interventions would require immediate hospitalization lasting 5 to 7 days.
