Going home for the holidays? ZSSK revealed where the trains fill up the fastest

The Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) expects increased interest in train travel with the approaching holiday season. This is one of the strongest periods of the year, when travelers move to see their loved ones all over Slovakia. As the carrier informed on Tuesday, it continuously monitors the occupancy of the trains.

He expects the greatest interest in travel to be on the line Bratislava – Žilina – Košice. Currently, it can still offer passengers enough free seats. “The average occupancy of the busiest ZSSK long-distance trains is currently 76%, while it is estimated that occupancy will increase during the following days,” explained company spokesman Ján Baček.

Long-distance express trains Bratislava – Košice run every hour from morning to evening, which allows for a more even distribution of passengers throughout the day. 30 express trains with a total capacity of approximately 17,500 seats run daily on the entire northern route.

In the new train traffic schedule 2025/2026 valid from December 14, the Tatran and Kriváň express trains run even faster, while the fastest connection completes the route in 4 hours and 53 minutes. “For more comfortable travel ZSSK advises passengers to buy a seat in addition to their ticket and secure a seat in time.” Baček added.
