Moscow reports recapture of the city of Kupiansk in Ukraine

The Russian army claims to have taken control of all districts of Kupiansk in eastern Ukraine. However, Ukrainian sources talk about the liberation of some areas.

The Russian military said again on Friday that it had taken control of all districts of the city of Kupiansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

According to it, the Russian state news agency TASS quoted Leonid Sharov, the spokesman of the West unit group, according to whom the Russian forces repel all Ukrainian attacks in the surrounding villages.

Control over the city of Kupiansk

Kupiansk is a key railway junction, which Russia claims to have occupied in November. Ukraine immediately responded by announcing that its forces had liberated several neighborhoods in the northern part of the city in eastern Ukraine and surrounded the Russians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also visited the area a few days ago, who posted a video on social media in a bulletproof vest in front of a sign with the name Kupianska at the entrance to the city.

According to the DeepState interactive map, which monitors the situation on the battlefield and whose creators have ties to the military, Ukrainian soldiers control at least three villages to the north and west of Kupiansk, as well as the northern parts of Kupiansk.

The Reuters agency pointed out that it could not immediately verify the reports from the front line.

Kupiansk was first captured by Russia shortly after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Ukrainians recaptured it during the autumn counter-offensive of the same year. Before the invasion of Russian troops, approximately 55,000 people lived there.
