Waze starts testing display of traffic lights in navigation

App is already testing the display of traffic lights during navigation in “home”, Israel.

The application, Google Maps’ biggest competitor, is currently testing the display of traffic lights during navigation, a feature that has long been requested by platform users.

The novelty began to be tested only in Israel, but may spread to other locations. The absence of traffic lights is one of the main complaints from users of the app, especially because its direct competitor, Maps, already offers this option.

According to the Israeli portal, the display of traffic lights is still in an initial testing phase within the application. In May, a Waze spokesperson had already indicated to app users that this feature was in the team’s planning phase.

One of the features of the feature is that, during navigation with a pre-defined route, Waze shows only three traffic lights at a time. The objective is to avoid “polluting” the map screen with signaling icons. When the driver is driving without a defined route, that is, he only has the map open on the screen, the application displays all the traffic lights around the perimeter.

This possible future update should optimize the experience of those who use the app on a daily basis, by bringing another planned functionality for guidance and planning during navigation.

The display of traffic lights on Waze remains in the testing phase and, for now, is only available to some users in Israel. There is still no official forecast for testing in other countries, nor for a global launch of the functionality.

In 2022, Google announced that Maps would start reporting on traffic lights and stop signs. Waze belongs to Google, so we can imagine that the two platforms share the technology that already allows Maps to show traffic lights.
