The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra will be under orange warning until 03:00 on Saturday. The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation”.
O (IPMA) this Wednesday extended the orange warning issued for six districts in the north and center of mainland Portugal due to the forecast of severe sea unrest until Saturday. The IPMA had previously issued an orange warning until Thursday.
In a new statement, the Institute indicates that the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra will be under orange warning until 03:00 on Saturday, with northwest waves measuring 5 to 5.5 meters being expected, with a maximum height of 10 meters.
Also due to the state of the sea, IPMA placed the districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon and Beja under yellow warning until 7am on Saturday.
Due to the sea unrest, the sea bars of Caminha, Vila Praia de Âncora Esposende, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Douro, Figueira da Foz, Nazaré and Cascais are today closed to all navigation, according to information available on the National Maritime Authority website.
The Aveiro and Viana do Castelo bars are closed to vessels less than 15 and 12 meters in length, respectively.
IPMA also issued a yellow warning for the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga due to sometimes heavy rain between 5pm and 9pm on Friday.
The Institute also placed the north coast of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo under yellow warning between 15:00 on Friday and 07:00 on Saturday due to the forecast of sea agitation, with waves from the northwest measuring 4 to 4.5 meters being expected.
The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation, and yellow when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
