He judged that their participation in the ongoing negotiations on the American peace plan “does not portend anything good”, noting that she has not been informed of the results of the latter in Berlin.
“The participation of the Europeans, in terms of the possibility of acceptance (of the agreement by Moscow) does not bode well,” said the spokesman of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, according to Russian agencies.
Peskov said that Russia should first be informed of what was worked out in the recent negotiations between Ukrainians and Americans before organizing a new meeting, with its own participation, on the issue.
What was discussed in Berlin?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday hailed the “progress” achieved in the negotiations, following meetings in Berlin with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The Europeans, allies of Kiev, are promoting a parallel proposal involving the deployment of a multinational force in Ukraine, guarantees similar to those in Article 5 of the NATO treaty and the creation of an 800,000-strong Ukrainian army. These proposals are considered unacceptable by Moscow, which has already rejected them in the past.
The details of the US plan after its revision have not been announced. Zelensky, however, said it also includes territorial concessions from Kyiv.
Washington’s original plan was seen by Kiev and the Europeans as favorable to the Kremlin’s positions.
A European diplomatic source in Kiev told AFP that the stake now for the EU is “to remove the US from Russian positions”.
