Videos posted on social media show streets in the city center completely flooded
A storm hit the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of this Wednesday (Dec 17, 2025). Videos published on social media show streets in the city center flooded, such as Praça do Pedro, next to Rua do Imperador, the city’s main thoroughfare.

The municipality issued an alert of extreme risk of landslides in the Quitandinha region. According to the agency, more than 150 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours in the city.
In the neighborhoods of Independência and São Sebastião, the landslide risk protocol was activated with sirens. There are no reports of deaths or injuries so far.
According to the Secretary of Civil Defense, Guilherme Moraes, teams have been monitoring the consequences of the rains since early in the morning.
“We provide warnings to the population using sirens and open support points in regions such as Quitandinha, Thouzet, 24 de Maio, Vila Felipe, Alto da Serra and Independência. We also advise the suspension of public transport in the 1st District and the closure of businesses in the Historic Center to protect the population”, said Moraes.
The city hall suspended classes throughout the municipal network and transferred residents of the highest risk areas to schools – transformed into . Public transport in the city was suspended for two hours, but they were released.
The Civil Defense’s order is for the population to avoid risk areas and stay alert for signs of landslides, and in case of emergency call 199.
