It happened in 2018. While downhill on a mountain bike on a route in the Czech Republic, a jump that went too far caused Michaela Benthaus to fall. The then 26-year-old mechatronics student at the Johannes Kepler University Linz broke a vertebra and was paralyzed. Her great sporting passions – in addition to mountain biking, parkour and snowboarding – were a thing of the past. But another passion remained and was lived even more intensively from then on – the enthusiasm for space.
