The secret of the unique taste that distinguishes these herrings from others is addition of pickled mushroomsespecially butter mushrooms and bay boletes. Thanks to this, they fit perfectly into the Christmas atmosphere and they go well with other Christmas Eve dishes. They are prepared very quickly, so they can be made on Christmas Eve, but to let the flavors blend together, it is recommended to prepare them the day before.

The priest’s herrings delight with their simplicity and multidimensional taste. I have been preparing them for the holidays for several years now guests always ask for more. So I usually prepare two portions, because there is no shortage of people who like this delicacy in my house. I always make them from this recipe To make the “parish herring” you need:

  • 4-5 herring sheets a la matias
  • A jar of marinated mushrooms (the best choice is butter mushrooms or bolete mushrooms)
  • 1 red onion
  • 4 tablespoons of oil
  • Parsley
  • 4-5 tablespoons of vinegar

Preparation method:

Start by soaking the herring flakes in water for about 3 hoursreplacing the water in the meantime. Drain them and cut them into pieces. Also cut the marinated mushrooms into cubes and the onion into slices. Also chop the parsley finely.

Mix the oil and vinegar in a bowl. Add all the chopped ingredients and finally add the herring. Mix everything thoroughly and Set aside in the fridge for several hours to let the flavors meld.
