The United Kingdom will return to the Erasmus program in 2027as the newspaper announced exclusively this Tuesday The Guardian. The announcement came one day before the EU and the United Kingdom closed the Treaty reached six months ago. In this way, the Executive of the leader, Keir Starmer, will offer the opportunity for young people from his country to train abroad.
Regarding the agreement with Gibraltar, which began almost four years ago after Brexit, both the EU and Starmer’s country have managed to close the legal texts that include the terms of the bloc’s new relationship with the British overseas territory.
“The text is currently under legal review by the European Union and the United Kingdom, before being able to proceed with the respective internal procedures for the signing and conclusion of the future agreement,” the community spokesperson highlighted to Europa Press, who has pointed out that the legal text was completed on the 12th.
Some of the objectives pursued by this agreement are to “guarantee the prosperity” of the region through the “removal of physical barriers“for the free movement of people and goods between both areas, “while preserving the borderless Schegen area, the Single Market and the Customs Union.”
Regarding the return of the Erasmus program in 2027, It is estimated that tuition will drop to 11,000 euros for a community student at a British university, which means a reduction of nearly three times what is currently allocated, an issue that many have celebrated, as is the case of the British Secretary of State for the European Union.
“Joining Erasmus is a great victory for young people, breaking barriers and broadening horizons. It ensures that everyone, regardless of their economic or social background, has the opportunity to study and do internships abroad,” he said.
“This is more than just travel. It’s about acquiring future skills, academic success and the next generation’s access to the best possible opportunities,” he finally added. The signing of this agreement will mean the injection of 650 million euros in 2027 from the United Kingdom to Brussels, with the aim that students can participate in the 2027/2028 academic year.
