The weather in our area is currently being affected by a large area of high pressure that is spreading over a large part of Europe and ensuring stable, dry weatherinforms. Since the end of November, when the snow disaster hit Slovakia, the situation has calmed down and the weather has stabilized. Warmer air flows into the country, but it manifests itself mainly in high altitudes. In the lower regions, the inversion continues with cold, fogs and clouds.
This nature of the weather should remain until approximately December 20. The change is expected only during the weekend, when the influence of the pressure level should weaken. A cold front will begin to penetrate over western Germany and a pressure trough will deepen over the Mediterranean, which will affect the weather in the Alps.
The new depression should bring more precipitation and snow at higher altitudes, especially in the Italian and Swiss Alps. However, significant precipitation is not expected in the coming days, which indicates the continuation of the dry season.
The map of expected precipitation totals until Christmas shows that Slovakia will remain in the so-called “rainfall hole”, i.e. areas with minimum rainfall. The first rain showers could appear only during the Christmas holidays, but the probability of a white Christmas is low. The situation will develop depending on how strong the high pressure remains and how far the low pressure extends over the Alps.
A significant change in the weather, cooling and perhaps even the return of snow is likely only during Christmas itself or at the turn of the year. However, the forecasts for this period are still very uncertain, so it is expected that the forecasts will be further refined. Until then, dry, foggy and inverse weather should prevail.
