Nuno Loureiro was shot dead at home. He led one of the most important laboratories at MIT, where he carried out nuclear research
Israel is evaluating Iran’s possible involvement in the death of , murdered at home this week in the city of Boston, in the United States.
The information is provided by the Jerusalem Post, which reports that Israeli officials are examining information that has emerged in recent days, which points to an Iranian connection to the case.
It should be remembered that Nuno Loureiro worked as a nuclear scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was one of the main faces of research in the matter, even directing a laboratory linked to nuclear research.
He ended up shot dead in his home, in news released by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
According to the Jerusalem Post, the possible Iranian connection is still under investigation, and none of the evidence found at the crime scenes supports this.
The Israeli newspaper writes that the investigation in question is due to the sensitive nature of Nuno Loureiro’s research area, considered one of the most important researchers in physics and nuclear energy.
The publication emphasizes, however, that there is no evidence or evidence that points to the involvement of a foreign state or a secret service operation.
Without prejudice to this, US authorities continue to investigate the case.
According to the Brookline police, where Nuno Loureiro lived, officers responded to a warning of gunshots at a residence on Gibbs Street at around 8:30 pm local time on Monday. “A victim was found after being shot multiple times,” said local police deputy superintendent Paul Campbell, speaking to WBZ-TV.
The victim, Nuno Loureiro, was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Boston, where he died on Tuesday morning. So far, authorities have not released further details about the circumstances of what happened, nor have they indicated whether any suspects have been identified. “This is an active and ongoing homicide investigation,” Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office said in a statement.
The death of the Portuguese professor had a strong impact on MIT. In May last year, Nuno Loureiro had been appointed director of the institution’s Center for Plasma and Fusion Science, described on the official website as “one of MIT’s largest laboratories”, with more than 250 researchers, students and full-time staff spread across seven buildings.
