Štúr fought for the freedom of the Slovak nation. He paid for it with personal happiness

“Ludevít Štúr is a personality who can carry a great pathos, a great gesture, big words and a large format without it appearing disproportionate. We tried to express with the film visuals that Štúr seemed to have a mission: a deeply internalized, insistent need to define a nation, to give it a language, a shape and an awareness of itself. At the same time, a personal level can also be read in this image. Štúr could not return the love, because as if he had no inner space for it, his whole being was filled with the belief that he had to work and die for the nation. His personal life still raises questions today, we inevitably fill it with the content we need – as a society, as a nation, that is trying to create a relationship with him. We are not accidental after all, he has been placed at the top of the pantheon of Slovakia’s patrons: we have named streets, squares, cities and institutions after him.” says Mariana Čengel Solčanská, who not only directed the film, but also wrote the screenplay based on her own book model.
